EcoFocus Film Festival presents The Jekyll Island Green Screen 2014
Film, Cocktails, and Conversation for our Coastal Community
Join chapter members on Saturday March 1, as we travel to Jekyll Island for this premier event on the Georgia Coast, the second annual Jekyll Island Green Screen, presented by Athens’ acclaimed EcoFocus Film Festival. The event is free and open to the public. This year, we will be providing two thought-provoking and visually-stunning new films. To be held in the afternoon and evening at the new Jekyll Island Convention Center, the Jekyll Island Green Screen will open with the Disney Nature film, Wings of Life. The cinematography in this family-friendly film is truly astounding.
Following the opening film, a reception, including light hors d’oeuvres and cash bar, will feature presentations by researchers working on Georgia’s wild and beautiful coast.
Finally, this year’s feature film, Into the Gyre, will follow an expedition aboard a tall ship to investigate the impact of plastic pollution in the Atlantic Ocean.
Stick around after the feature – a panel of experts will discuss the film and take questions from the audience. This year’s Jekyll Island Green Screen is brought to you by EcoFocus Film Festival, Georgia Sea Grant, the Jekyll Island Authority, Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve – Coastal Training Program, One Hundred Miles, the Southeast Atlantic Marine Debris Initiative, Surfider Foundation Atlanta Chapter, the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service, and University of Georgia Public Service and Outreach.

Wings of Life is a stunning adventure full of intrigue, drama and mesmerizing beauty. Narrated by Meryl Streep, this intimate and unprecedented look at butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, bats and flowers is a celebration of life, as a third of the world’s food supply depends on these incredible – and increasingly threatened – creatures.
Into the Gyre has won numerous awards at international film festivals. This film documents a groundbreaking expedition to study the location, extent and effect of plastic pollution in the North Atlantic Ocean. Thirty-four volunteer researchers, scientists and sailors participated in this five- week long adventure to the remote Sargasso Sea, east of Bermuda. Sailing on a 135-foot tall ship, operated by the Sea Education Association, the film closely follows four of the scientists as they collect, count, and archive the plastic they encounter. Along the way, the film examines the history of plastics, the adverse effects it is causing in the ocean and possible solutions to this problem.
