The Georgia Chapter has two active Rise Above Plastics programs founded and lead by chapter activists:
Drifters Project
Pam Longobardi’s Drifters Project was founded after she witnessed after seeing the mountainous piles of plastic the ocean was regurgitating on remote Hawaiian beaches. Her work focuses on working directly through local sponsorship, small grant support and personal expenditure by cleaning beaches with local populaces and concerned citizens, and transforming that work into pieces of art. Pam has made scores of interventions, cleaning beaches and making collections from all over the world, removing thousands of pounds of material from the natural environment and re-situating it within the cultural context for examination.
Bring Your Own Bag Project
Ashley Workman, Tybee Island local and longtime coastal resident heads up the Bring Your Own Bag Project across the Coastal Empire. The BYOB project encourages people to bring reusable bags when they make a purchase at local vendors. In addition to ongoing efforts to reduce single use plastics in the restaurant and take out industry, every year she hosts a Bring Your Own Bag Week on the island, featuring gifts and prizes from local vendors.
